Misconceptions About SSD
At Olinsky Law Group, our New York SSD lawyers have decades of experience helping people in need navigate the complicated bureaucracy of the Social Security Administration (SSA). Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits can be a critical element to a household's finances when disability strikes. We can help you secure the benefits that you deserve.
Our firm's experience has given us a depth of knowledge on the SSD and SSI process that is difficult to match in New York. People often have misperceptions about how SSD and SSI work or what you need to do to secure them. Some of the more common Social Security Disability myths include:
- You cannot work at all — This is not true. You can earn up to $1,000 per month and still be considered disabled.
- You must appear disabled — A finding of disabled is based on medical evidence.
- If you are too young, you cannot collect disability benefits — SSI is specifically designed to help those who have not contributed enough to qualify for SSD. Further, SSD may be available to children under certain circumstances based on their parents' status.
- You cannot collect other benefits simultaneously — SSD can be collected at the same time as VA benefits without offset. VA benefits do, however, offset SSI benefits. But, qualifying for SSI also automatically qualifies you for other benefits such as Medicaid, food stamps and heating programs, for example.
