Social Security Disability Claims for Individuals Over Age 50

SSD for Workers Over 50

Attempting to secure Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits for most people requires a showing that they are unable to maintain substantially gainful employment on a full time basis. This can place an exceptional burden on some individuals.

For those who have traditionally been employed in occupations in which physical stamina or strength are a key component, even minor injuries may preclude that person's ability to maintain their employment.

At Olinsky Law Group, our New York SSD lawyers have a great understanding and depth of knowledge regarding the rules, procedures and definitions employed by the Social Security Administration (SSA) in evaluating Social Security Disability claims for individuals over age 50. We have been helping people secure the SSD benefits they need and deserve since 1986. Let us put that accumulated experience and skill to work helping you.

How Do SSD Rules Change Once I Reach 50 Years Old?

When you turn 50 years old, if you have been traditionally engaged in an occupation that bore a heavier toll on your body, the level of disability required to qualify for SSD benefits is relaxed.

This is done in recognition of the fact that some occupations require more physically and that over the years that accumulated wear can make it more difficult to continue with that type of physically intense labor. Additionally, there may be a lack of transferrable skills that keep someone who is engaged in these types of occupations from switching to a less physically demanding job.

These standards relax again when you reach 55 years old and again when you reach 60 years of age.
