SSD Eligibility
When a disability prevents someone from being able to work, that disability affects more than just that person, especially if the disabled person has a family to support. Providing the financial support that is necessary when you are raising children can be an almost impossible task when you are unable to work. The smartest thing anyone in that situation can do is to look at all available options for financial support.
Social Security Disability (SSD) under certain circumstances can offer benefits directly to the children of a disabled worker.
At Olinsky Law Group, our New York SSD lawyers have decades of experience helping people who are no longer able to work due to injury or an illness to secure the SSD benefits they need and deserve. Our ability to help secure SSD benefits also extends to family members who may be in need of financial assistance. We can help you answer the question, "Can my family receive social security benefits if I'm disabled?"
Who Else Can Receive SSD Benefits?
- Your spouse if he or she is 62 years old or older
- A spouse of any age if they are caring for a child of yours who is under 16 years old or disabled
- An unmarried child who is under 18 years old or under 19 years old if they are still in elementary or secondary school full time. Adopted children have access to benefits the same as those who are biologically your children. In some cases, stepchildren or grandchildren may have access to benefits also.
- Unmarried children aged 18 or older who are disabled and became so before their 21st birthday
