Disability Insurance Benefits Programs
The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers several disability benefits programs. Social Security Disability (SSD) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are designed to offer financial assistance to those who are unable to work because of a disabling injury or medical condition.
SSD and SSI are designed to meet the needs of two different segments of the disabled population.
Social Security Disability
- Unable to maintain substantially gainful full time employment
- Must have worked five of the last 10 years and paid into the Social Security system
Supplemental Security Income
- Unable to maintain substantially gainful full time employment
- Designed for those who have not paid sufficient amounts into the Social Security system
